Holland Engineering pulled from their depth of capabilities to provide engineering, survey, and environmental services to Consumers Energy in support of their Freedom Pipeline Project.
The project entails the installation of a new 20" outside diameter natural gas mainline located within the existing pipeline right-of-way. The project area consists of six linear miles along the existing Consumers Energy's pipeline right-of-way running from Freedom Township to the City of Chelsea in Washtenaw County, Michigan. In addition to creating construction alignment drawings, HEI prepared site modifications at the Chelsea tie-in site and Freedom Compressor Station; and the design of a 2,500' long HDD stream and road crossing. HEI's survey crew performed a preliminary survey for the pipeline determining section and parcel lines, right-of-way widths and profiles for all road crossings, providing profile information for drain and creek crossings and overall profile of the pipeline route for preparation of hydrostatic test drawings. Plats were also prepared from the information gathered.
HEI was also responsible for the as-built survey of the pipeline, picking up pipe data, weld location and depth of cover. The data will be entered on base maps developed for the project. The existing right-of-way crosses agricultural fields, three waterbodies, a walnut grove and several areas of emergent vegetation, of which five are wetlands. As a result, environmental staff at HEI performed wetland delineation and a water body assessment including mapping, cross sections and reporting in support of the permitting compliance for the project. HEI was excited for the opportunity to showcase several of our in-house disciplines on this exciting pipeline project.

Pilot Flying J has opened a new Pilot Truck Stop on the south side of Holland. Construction is completed and the grand opening happened in November of 2015. This new facility is located at the intersection of M-40 and I-196 and will be the first Pilot Truck Stop in the area.
HEI’s Energy Group continues to remaining busy assisting our clients with facility design and engineering related services. Most recently, HEI assisted TransCanada with the installation of new 150 Hp Atlas Copco air compressors at three of their compressor stations located in Ohio, Kentucky and Mississippi. Holland Engineering is providing the installation design drawings for each location including the air piping, volume tanks, mist eliminators, air dryers, liquid drains, controls, structural modifications and cooling systems. At two of the stations, the compressors will be air cooled which requires a ducting design. The third location will be water cooled which requires a coolant system with controls, pumps, and fans.
The compressors are used to supply both starting air for TransCanada’s natural gas compressor engines and also instrument air for their pneumatic equipment in and around their facilities. This will add reliability to their air systems and in turn improve their ability to move gas throughout their cross country pipelines. HEI is pleased to have the opportunity to further assist TransCanada with our professional services.

The Outdoor Discovery Center/Macatawa Greenway is doing many exciting projects around the West Michigan area and Holland Engineering is excited to be supporting their efforts.
HEI is currently providing construction support services on a constructed wetland project, assisting with designs for a future trail extension and the addition of a new interpretive visitor’s center building on the main campus. This building will provide more space to display exhibits, a new welcome and information desk and increase classroom space.
HEI worked with the project team including ODC staff, CL Construction, and Lucid Architecture to develop a site plan that could accommodate the centers current and future growth needs while reducing environmental impacts. Due to the high groundwater table and site soil types, the property was not able to obtain a permit for a conventional on-site septic system and all the facility’s currently on the site were on a pump and haul system which was quickly becoming undesirable and costly. After a site meeting with the local health department an interesting idea was born and the site became a test cause for the first constructed wetland septic treatment system in the county.
Interacting closely with the Health Department staff, HEI created a design for the system and established a testing and user’s manual to ensure that the system is working for this site. The system will take standard septic tank effluent and pass in though a gravel-filled box, which is populated with several different types of wetland vegetation prior to discharge into a conventional drain field system. Plants are chosen specifically for their ability to filter out specific nutrients in the wastewater stream and therefore “clean” the water prior to discharge. This system will be closely monitored by ODC staff and reports provided to the health department will help determine if other system will be permitted in the area.

Holland Engineering’s Civil Infrastructure division has remained busy this summer with plenty of land development projects; including tiny houses, high-rise residential apartments, and commercial expansion projects.
On the commercial front, we have been a part of many exciting projects.
We’ve also been busy working on local residential developments.
Holland Engineering has designed a number of engineered on-site systems recently. Some of these have included advanced treatment systems due to the high groundwater table and proximity to lakes, while others are pressure dose mounds or hillside system due to low permeability soils.
Various sand mining operations have reached out to us for our services as well. We’ve worked with a couple of local aggregate suppliers to perform several services for them including assisting with permit renewals, obtaining approvals for new pit locations, volume calculations using conventional survey and UAS surveys.

Holland Engineering, Inc.’s Environmental Services Division has been busy this fall working with TransCanada’s Pipeline Company throughout Michigan. HEI’s Environmental staff have performed wetland delineations, stream assessments, threatened and endangered species assessments, wetland and stream restoration design, biological habitat assessments, unanticipated discovery plans, constructability and feasibility reviews for multiple anomaly dig sites and pipeline replacement projects. Our experienced staff has also been serving as Environmental Inspectors for construction activities; including daily reporting, contractor coordination, soil sampling, water sampling, asbestos sampling, compaction testing, agricultural inspection, archaeological inspection, and ensuring environmental compliance on the project site.
HEI has utilized its strong regulator relationships through coordination with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) for soil erosion permits, wetlands permits, and hydrostatic water discharge and withdrawal permits to meet project schedules and demands. In addition, HEI obtained project clearances with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) and Section 106 with Michigan Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). These projects have been a collaborative effort between HEI’s Environmental Services, Surveying, and Engineering staff members providing TransCanada with a complete project team throughout project planning and construction.
