Holland Engineering worked with Kids' Food Basket on November 29th and sponsored a whole day of Sack Suppers for children in Holland, Michigan. In addition to the sponsorship, we are proud to have helped pack about 597 meals for children in need.
One in five Michigan children experiences hunger, and Kids' Food Basket works to change that. They serve children directly with their Sack Supper Program. These balanced meals fill the gap that schools and parents often cannot meet. The nutrients and energy provided by the Sack Suppers support strong minds and healthy bodies. This program has such a powerful impact because it helps kids stay focused, get their homework done, and keep up with other children.
Each month Holland Engineering team members volunteer to help pack these Sack Suppers, and we look forward to supporting Kids' Food Basket in the future with their fight to end childhood hunger!

This year, Holland Engineering participated in Adopt-A-Family for the holiday season. This program matches families in need with sponsors across the community. Both our Holland and Southfield offices participated and were able to help provide a great Christmas for two families!
Our Holland office adopted a family of four from Grand Rapids. This family has been through a lot. A year ago, the mother gave birth to her son prematurely. He was born with a lot of complications, including a cleft palate and three congenital heart defects. He was in the NICU for three months after birth. He is now one year old, but during his first year of life, he has had a total of eight surgeries, including two open-heart surgeries, several sleep studies, cleft palate repair, tracheostomy placement and the list goes on. He is scheduled to have another cleft palate repair surgery this year. Along with her son's health complications, the mother has had some health issues of her own. She was hospitalized this past summer for almost three months where she had several surgeries during that time.
Our Southfield office adopted a young single mother and two small children through the Community Housing Network. This nonprofit organization provides housing and housing resources for people who are homeless or facing homelessness, people with disabilities, people with low income, and other vulnerable residents of southeast Michigan. They were able to get them everything on their wishlist and more!
We are so proud to have participated in the Adopt-A-Family program this year. Thank you to our generous staff for helping provide a great Christmas for these families in need!
Holland Engineering remains dedicated to looking for ways to give back to the communities where we live, work and play. The eagerness of our staff to participate along with their generosity has allowed us to expand our reach and offer additional involvement with several noteworthy charitable organizations.
For the fifth consecutive year Holland Engineering was a sponsor at DTE’s Annual “Nights of Warm Hearts” fundraiser. The Heat and Warmth Fund (THAW) is an independent non-profit agency that provides low-income individuals and families with emergency energy assistance and advocates for long-term solutions to energy issues. Since 1985, THAW has provided more than $145 million in aid to more than 200,000 Michigan households who have found themselves in a temporary crisis. The Night of Warm Hearts Gala Event was held this past year on November 12th in Detroit, MI and is a signature event for THAW which will help hundreds of families in the community keep safe and warm this winter. For more information on THAW, please visit their website and www.thawfund.org.
Holland Engineering remains dedicated to supporting Kids’ Food Basket, a local non-profit organization that has really taken the initiative in addressing childhood hunger within our communities. Many of us probably don’t worry about if we will be getting dinner. Sadly, over 6,000 school-aged kids in the greater Grand Rapids and Muskegon area face that question each day! Kids’ Food Basket works with local schools to identify children in need and provide them with nutritionally balanced sack suppers as evening meals. In addition to sponsoring this great organization, staff members also got their own families involved this year by decorating brown paper bags for Kids’s Food Basket to use. What a fun way to put a personal touch on an organization we proudly support! For more information about this great organization, please visit their website at www.kidsfoodbasket.org.
Holland Engineering also once again participated as a “Toys for Tots” drop-off location this year. “Toys for Tots” is a charitable outreach of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and is a program to collect new, unwrapped toys during the Christmas season. The toys are distributed to less fortunate children throughout the community. HEI collected toys throughout the month of December and was happy to once again, overflow our donation box! Please visit www.toysfortots.org for more information on this great organization!
For several years now, Holland Engineering's Surveying Staff have been assisting our clients with 4-Way Sweeping services in the field. A 4-Way Sweep is an investigative process in which electronic pipe locators and other means are used to find, trace, and help identify both underground and above ground utilities within a defined geographical location.
As our experience grows and the need for this service is in greater demand by our clients, Holland Engineering has proactively put together a comprehensive training program to guide and train our employees as they provide this service to our clients.
This training is an introduction to Underground Utility/Facility Detection. It also addresses the commonly used 4-Way Sweep process. The training includes a basic knowledge of equipment, planning and procedures to conduct sweeping and 4-Way Sweep processes utilized by Holland Engineering. This program was created through a combination of manuals, laws, other training guides and most importantly, the knowledge of Holland Engineering's most experienced Locator Teams/Sweep Crews. Every aspect of 4-way Sweeping and general facility location is covered in this training, but keep in mind that his is just a guide.
Though it is an essential tool, ultimately nothing can beat hands on training and a positive attitude on the part of crews doing the work.
The goals of the 4-Way Sweep Training Program are:
- Damage Prevention
- Route Planning
Holland Engineering is confident that our Sweeping Program will not only better equip our filed professionals with the skills they need to accurately complete our clients projects but will also assist us in maintaining an excellent safety record while in the field.
Holland Engineering is proud to announce the incorporation of Mobile Lidar to its growing list of services. Recognizing the need to provide clients with the best solutions for each project, Holland Engineering is constantly evaluating the technologies that will best serve our clients.
Mobile Lidar allows the ability to drive at highway speeds while collecting 3D data on everything it can scan. Road surfaces, topographic features, bridges, signs, poles, etc. can all be captured and brought back to the office for analysis and extraction. From these virtual point clouds we can provide crack analysis on pavement, bridge clearances, create topographic maps, inventory utilities and signage to name a few of the services. In addition, we have added the ability to collect data off-road or by sea from a fully equipped boat to collect bridge, embankment information, dock and port information all from the water.
Holland Engineering is ready to meet your needs on road, off road, and by water. Look for more information on this service and how it can add value to your project. Please do not hesitate to contact us to learn more about how this tool can benefit your next project.

Have you been noticing an increased level of concern among your residents regarding their water supply as the City of Flint has been working through their drinking water issues? As communities enter the normal spring water system flushing season, you may receive more questions than normal as sediment is stirred up in the lines.
Historically, issues like the Flint supply system raise enough public interest to influence the availability of funding for public infrastructure projects. As the public interest is elevated, do you know what your water system needs to provide continued reliable service for your residents?
Our professionals can assist you with handouts, community meetings, and the State mandated water system reliability studies as you consider the long term needs of your water system maintenance. Let our years of experience work for you!
