Holland Engineering recognizes the value of investing in the future of young industry professionals through our internship programs and our annual scholarship. This year’s $2,500 scholarship will be awarded to one engineering student from either Calvin College or Western Michigan University to be used towards tuition or the purchase of student books.
Each year Holland Engineering awards a $2,500 scholarship to local college students. We offered this year’s scholarship to Survey students from Ferris State University and Michigan Technological University. Holland Engineering is excited to announce the 2018 Survey Scholarship winner, Travis Steenwyk!
As part of a mussel survey and relocation project, biologists at Holland Engineering completed snorkel surveys of the Huron River in metro Detroit. Due to the new mussel protocol requirements and tight project deadlines, this project had to be completed quickly and efficiently.
Freshwater mussels are filter feeders who burrow in the substrate of rivers, streams, and lakes throughout the world. The U.S. alone is home to some 300 species. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the Nature Conservancy, approximately 70 percent of mussel species in North America are extinct or endangered. Michigan contains four federally listed species (six including two not found in the state since 1930) and twenty-six additional state-listed mussel species (all federally listed species are also listed in the state). Two of the state-listed species will be reviewed by the USFWS for possible federal listing before 2023.
Due to the continued success after expanding our Structural Engineering services, we are excited to announce a new, stand-alone Structural Engineering Group, located in our Holland office.

Holland Engineering worked with Kids’ Food Basket on November 29th and sponsored a whole day of Sack Suppers for children in Holland, Michigan. In addition to the sponsorship, we are proud to have helped pack about 597 meals for children in need.

Over the past few years, Holland Engineering has provided staking assistance to SEMCO Energy for the installation of new gas main or service lines in Allegan and Ottawa Counties.
